The Similkameen Spotlight was recognized as one of the top newspapers in small town British Columbia Saturday night.

The Spotlight received a silver prize at the annual BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Awards, the Ma Murrays, in the under 3,000 circulation category.

“This is a NEWSpaper,” the judges said of the Spotlight. “Well written hard news stories with photos that draw you in, prominent masthead, clean and easy-to-read pages with relevant community headlines, good writing and well-placed photos…Well done.” Publisher Andrea DeMeer credited all members of the Spotlight team with the honor.

“While the judges commented on news writing and presentation, there is so much more that goes on to produce this paper every week. From the customer service you receive at the front counter when you purchase your subscription or place an ad, to getting those papers to the post office and stores each week, everyone here is dedicated and crucial.”

DeMeer also gratefully noted the contribution of The Spotlight’s team of ad and page designers, which works out of the Penticton Western News, as well local submitters.

“Over the past year our contributors, most notably columnist Art Martens and freelance photographer Bob Marsh, have been key to The Spotlight’s success.”
