There’s no reason to sit at home and watch Netflix this Family Day Weekend.

There are numerous activities being offered in town - and one of them is even a movie.

The Granite Creek Preservation Society is hosting a family matinee at the Princeton Museum Saturday February 16.

The group is showing the classic Charlie Chaplin silent film The Gold Rush.

“While it isn’t about our area, it captures what it must have been like to be a prospector so many years ago, said Diane Sterne, with GCPS. “The movie is really funny, however, it does have an underlying serious note to it. The loneliness the prospectors faced and starvation were common problems, regardless of where they were searching for their treasure.”

The movie was made in 1925. It’s a rags to riches story and Chaplin was not just the star, he was also the writer and director.

“We thought for Family Day it would be unique for the residents of Princeton to experience a Saturday matinee black and white silent film,” said Sterne.

Doors open at 1 p.m. and admission is free. There’s also popcorn and hot chocolate - with marshmallows!

Monday February 18 there is free skating at the Princeton arena from noon to 1 p.m., and the same day China Ridge Trails is welcoming families for free cross country skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing.

The annual China Ridge Family Day runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and visitors are encouraged to bring their own mugs to enjoy some more free hot chocolate, as well as barbecue lunch.
