A brief hold and secure was reportedly activated at Clarence Fulton Secondary School in Vernon.
RCMP cruisers were stationed outside the school around 12 p.m. Friday (June 2).
A witness told The Morning Star the police presence and hold and secure came due to an exploded aerosol can.
Under a hold and secure, schools keep students indoors and all doors are locked and monitored by staff, while classes continue as normal inside. However, around noon, students could be seen walking around outside on lunch break as normal.
Fulton principal Mike Edgar sent a letter to parents after the incident, confirming the hold and secure was used as a precaution while RCMP investigated a report, though it doesn’t state what was investigated. Edgar did say the procedure is used “when there is a threat in the community.”
“Within a short period of time, the RCMP advised that the situation was under control and the additional security was lifted,” said Edgar. “Students will continue with normal routines as per usual.”
Student safety is first priority, said Edgar, and added there was no direct threat to the safety and well-being of the students.
“We are proud to say all our students and staff responded appropriately and implemented the hold and secure in an orderly fashion,” he said.
