The Upper Similkameen Indian Band will be conducting a prescribed burn near Hedley.

The burn was planned to begin on April 3, depending on weather. It will continue through mid-April or until the grass is too green to burn.

The BC Wildfire Service is assisting the USIB on the burn, which includes USIB land adjacent to Hedley and Highway 3.

The total area aimed to burned will cover up to 168 hectares, and is located about 32 kilometres southeast of Princeton

The goal of the burn is to eliminate fuel and the build-up of dead grass in the area. It is also meant to encourage the ecosystem and protect the community.

Smoke is expected to be visible from Lower Similkameen IR, Upper Similkameen IR, Village of Hedley and by travellers along Highway 3.

The burn will be controlled and closely monitored by personnel and will provide critical cross-training opportunities for the Upper Similkameen Indian Band and BC Wildfire Service.
