Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship is hosting a workshop on the benefits of planting shelterbelts and hedgerows around the farm.
The workshop will be held at the Cawston Community Hall on March 21 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
The benefits of planting shelterbelts and hedgerows, including which species are best to include, will be among the topics covered at the workshop.
The workshop will be hosted by Tamara Richardson of Cornucopia Crop Consulting, Willis Brown of Brown-Schneider Farms and Lia McKinnon of the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society.
Richardson is a well-known local entomologist, who is active in helping farmers to manage pests in their crops.
Brown is a local orchardist and ground crop farmer who knows all about hedgerows from first-hand experience, both the benefits and the challenges.
McKinnon works with the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society, a local nonprofit that helps landowners manage natural habitats on their properties.
“Populations of wild bees and other pollinators are declining around the world,” said Alyson Skinner, OSS executive director. “Planting high-quality shelterbelts not only helps these and other beneficial insects, but they can also offer drought protection, improve air quality, and form a physical barrier to weeds blowing in from roads and neighboring properties. “
The workshop is free, however OSS is requesting that interested participants please RSVP to the workshop by emailing info@osstewardship.ca or calling
