The cover picture from the last newspaper shows exactly why many of us in town do not want ATVs on our walking trails. Here is a machine with two distracted people on board splashing water as they cross a small creek or puddle. The water splashes up and washes off the oil from the chain, the grease from the shocks, the seeds from invasive species, and any other crud adhering to the chassis.

The mud then flows down the creek, or stays on the “trail.” If the puddle is on a regular trail then the next rider sees it and goes around, making the mud hole bigger. The railroad trail bed gets destroyed. Eventually a narrow game trail can become a vast mud bog. For proof merely try and walk around such formerly beautiful places as Lodestone Lake or Wells Lake (and a thousand other places).

Keep ATVs off the Trans Canada Trail!

Sincerely

John Henry
