Salmon Arm walkers raise more than $86,000 with Coldest Night of the Year

More than 300 people helped raise around $86,000 for a cause by walking together in Salmon Arm’s Coldest Night of the Year.

Forty-nine teams took park in the community fundraising event benefiting the Shuswap Food Action Society (SFAS) on Saturday evening, Feb. 24. As in past years, participants met in the parking lot of the downtown SACU branch, where they registered and took part in opening ceremonies before venturing off on either a 2- or 5-kilometre walk. Afterwards, walkers had the option to warm up with a hot meal outside the Downtown Askew’s.

As of Monday, Feb. 26, $86,446 was raised for SFAS, the event’s organizer. The non-profit SFAS works to address food insecurity, increase food and nutrition literacy and grow the local food economy. It’s programs include free food boxes for families in need, with food purchased directly from local farmers; the Shuswap Community Teaching Garden, which grows produce collectively to give
