A four-goal second period helped the Vernon Tigers defeat the expansion Princeton Rangers 10-7 in the Cats’ Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League home opener Sunday afternoon, May 8, at Kal Tire Place.
The teams were tied 3-3 after 20 minutes and the four-goal outburst gave Vernon a 7-4 lead heading into the third period.
Goals less than the two minutes apart early in the final frame brought the Rangers to within a goal before Vernon scored three times in less than three minutes midway through the period to put the game out of reach.
Captain Brennan Plante and Craig Bigsby led the Tigers with two goals each, both scoring on the powerplay, while Gord Wills-Good added a shorthanded goal and three helpers. Stephane Richard had a shorthanded goal and two assists while single goals went to Jordy Barr, Tyler Plante, Jay Seaton and Chad Dennison. Josh Point picked up the win in goal for the Tigers.
Mitch Brodt scored three powerplay goals for the Rangers while Lindsay Maclellan also added a marker with the man advantage. Nick Kapusty had two goals and two helpers for Princeton while Sweetgrass West-Benizita added the other.
Trenton Manossa-Gabriel was solid in goal for the Rangers, who fall to 0-3. Vernon is 1-1.
Princeton will host the Armstrong Shamrocks (0-1) Saturday, May 14, at the Princeton Arena (5 p.m. start). Next action for the Tigers is Thursday, May 19, when they entertain the Kelowna Raiders (2-0) at Kal Tire Place (7:30 p.m. start).
The Raiders hosted the Kamloops Rattlers (2-0) in a battle of early undefeated teams Sunday afternoon.
