Rockets compete in Pacific Regional Playoffs

The Thompson Okanagan Female Midget AAA Rockets travelled to Edmonton to compete in the Pacific Regional Playoffs the weekend of 1-3 April.

The team went in to the competition knowing that no B.C. team had won this series or scored a goal on their opponents.  The team came out strong the first game and scored the first goal of the game at the ten minute mark of the first period.  This goal was scored by Kelsey Freudenberger with assist from Chloe Kennedy and Bre Frasca. Edmonton Thunder tied the game early in the second period and scored the go ahead goal late in the second and the third period began with Edmonton being up 2-1. Edmonton scored again early in the third period but the Rockets answered back 30 seconds later (Goal Bre Frasca, assist Kelsey Freudenberger, Cora Sutton) and the score was 3-2 Edmonton. The Rockets came on strong in the back half of the third period but a late goal from a point shot of an Edmonton player thwarted the Rockets come back efforts and despite pulling the goalie, the game ended with Edmonton Thunder winning 4-2.

The Rockets started Game 2 knowing this was a must win situation. The Edmonton Thunder came out ready to close the series. Despite the Rockets evenly playing with the Thunder (Shots on goal at the end of the 1st period were 9 for Edmonton and 6 for the Rockets), Edmonton won the period and were up 3-0. The Rockets didn’t allow the score to deflate them and had a strong 2nd period but Edmonton Goalie Morgan Glover held off any shots on goal. The Rockets got one past Glover in the third period (scored by Janessa Jenkins, assist Bre Frasca) but overall came up short and Edmonton took the win with a final score of 7-1.

Rockets coach Mark Elder knew they were coming up against a very strong team however was proud of his team for what was accomplished throughout the season and in this series. “We have come very far this season in advancing B.C.’s female game and have accomplished in this series and at the Mac’s Tournament milestones that no B.C. female team had accomplished to date.” It is a building block for next season.
