The Lake City Hoops didn’t quite live up to their name in the championship game of the girls Lake City Tip-Off Tournament against the Kelowna Heat Sunday.
According to Penticton coach Chris Terris the Hoops had a strong offensive showing and good ball movement in the season-opener with the exception of the second half of the final game, which they lost 46-13 to the Heat.
“We had balanced scoring throughout the tournament with every player scoring at some point and contributing,” said Terris afterwards. “Sophie (Brydon) set the tone with her aggressiveness and activity at both ends of the floor. She did a great job of breaking down the defence all weekend.”
A total of 16 teams in U12 to U17 divisions took part in the tournament from Kamloops, Vernon and Kelowna.
In the final game the leading scorers for the Hoops were Jacqueline Mansiere with four points and Emma Terris and Karrah Roelfsema chipping in three each.
The host team opened the event against their championship opponents with the Heat coming away with a 47-33 victory.

Brydon led all point-getters for Penticton with eight. Emma Terris and Mansiere added six each. Jayden Yamamoto connected for four points.
Brydon hit for eight points for Penticton in the next game, a 41-30 win over the Kamloops ProHop.
Other point getters included Kalli Doell with six and five each for Emma Terris and Cassie Hannon.
The Hoops second win to advance to the final was a 51-37 win over the Kamloops Stormers.
Yamamoto lead the charge with a dozen points for the Hoops with Brydon connecting for 10.
Jennifer Hayman had eight points with Hannon and Roelfsema adding five and four points respectively.
“We’ve got a nice mixture of athleticism and size,” said coach Terris. “As the girls get to know each other better (the team is comprised of girls from Summerland, Pen High and Maggie) we should just become tougher and tougher to play against.”
The next action for the Lake City Hoops is May 5 and 6 at the 3D Tournament at Simon Fraser University.
