Dear Editor:
A recent article in the Summerland Review noted a $345 fine to residents for putting their garbage out overnight as it is a nuisance bear attractant.
Did B.C. Conservation Officers even give a warning?

The size of the fine certainly got my attention. I can sympathize with those residents as I am in the situation of waking up early to drive to my 95 year-old mother’s house for the pleasure of taking her garbage to the roadside in time for the 7 a.m. pickup.
The problem could be solved if early morning waste pick-up was scheduled for the more urban areas of town where bears are not likely a problem and waste could be out overnight.
Then we rural dwellers would be able to wake up at a sensible time and gladly comply with the garbage rules if our pick-up was a bit later.
