Work continues on Adra Tunnel north of Penticton

Donations have come in for restoration of historic tunnel

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is continuing its work to restore the Adra Tunnel near Naramata.

The regional district is working with the Woodwackers 2.0 community group, Recreation Sites and Trails BC and several local contractors to restore the tunnel on the rail trail.

The project is now seeking approval from the province for the final phase of work to be completed.

At present, rock stabilization and resurfacing of the tunnel floor with drainage ditches have been completed. In addition, LED lighting has been installed.

The final phase includes the construction of a structurally supported concrete arch, the installation of tunnel entrance gates and signage and the development of the timber design. The arch design has been submitted for approval.

The project has received support from donors, volunteers and businesses.

George and Sylvia Melville have donated $100,000. The regional district says their support will help cover additional costs required to complete the project.

Woodwackers 2.0 has also applied to the B.C. Tourism Growth Program for funding to complete the project.

Because the tunnel is an active construction site, it is closed to the public until further notice.
