The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will begin the process of cleaning up an usnsightly property on Kingston Avenue in Hedley.
In early August, 2020, the house and outbuildings were desgtroyed by fire. After receiving several complaints, the regional district’s bylaw enforcement officer attended the property and found it to be in contravention of the Untidy and Unsightly Premises Bylaw. The owner was notified by lettter and given until Nov. 9, 2020 to clean up the property.
However, after that date, the clean-up work had not been completed.
In a report to the regional district board, Laura Miller, building and enforcement services manager for the regional district, said the elderly property owner was lviing in a recreational vehicle on the sight, attempting to complete the work. The clean-up was hampered by limited income, no insurance and the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
In late January, a follow-up letter was sent to the property owner and in early February, the bylaw enforcemnt officer spoke by telephone with the proerty owner.
The municipality will begin the clean-up work and bill the property owner.
Tim Roberts, director for Electoral Area G, said it is important to recognize the owner is not able to pay for the work at this time, but the clean-up is necessary. “It’s affecting the health and well-being of the surrounding properties,” he said.
The clean-up work is scheduled to begin by June 7.
In addition to the work on this property, a community clean-up event is scheduled for Hedley. A map showing the types of wastes will be compiled this summer, with clean-up work to take place in the spring of 2022.
