It wasn’t just the firefighters and the library, thieves also ransacked the vehicles of paramedics Monday night.
Tom Robins, a longtime paramedic in Keremeos for the B.C. Ambulance Service, said his Jeep was gone through while he was working the call where a person was trapped in a truck about 200 feet down the mountain. The truck slid off the Nickel Plate Road sometime Monday afternoon coming to a rest about 200 feet down. A man had to walk out from the wreckage to get help to trap his friend.
Emergency responders were called out at about 6:45 p.m. to Nickel Plate Road. The dangerous rescue took hours with firefighters having to walk down to the man initially before more emergency personnel, basket and extrication equipment could be dropped down by rope.
“While out all of our units were out of the station Monday night. Someone rummaged through my Jeep, emptied my glove box and center console out onto the seat. It doesn’t appear anything got taken and he must have got spooked off, as I had $3 in the change tray that was not taken,” Robins said.
Several vehicles owned by firefighters out on the same call were also rummaged through. A duffle bag and child’s back pack was stolen from one of the vehicles.
Keremeos Volunteer Fire Chief Jordy Bosscha said the incident is discouraging to his members.
“It’s really discouraging. We’re helping people in need and somebody takes advantage,” he said.
The library also had a window smashed that same evening. At this point it isn’t believed anything was taken and the alarm likely scared the person off.
