Thieves are continuing to steal catalytic converters from vehicles in Summerland.

Sgt. Dave Preston of the Summerland RCMP detachment said two people were seen running down a street on Oct. 2 at about 4 a.m., around the time a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle. Another theft occurred overnight on Oct. 10 to 11 and was reported to police the following morning.

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device on vehicles. Preston said the catalytic converters can be removed quickly and can then be sold for scrap metal. Catalytic converters contain precious metals, and as a result of rising prices of these metals, the units have become a target for thieves.

Other thefts of catalytic converters have occurred throughout Summerland during the fall, as well as around the Okanagan Valley in previous years.
