Students at Summerland Secondary School will hold a one-day Fair Trade and Ethics Fair in Memorial Park in May.

Kaitlyn Nightingale, a Grade 12 student, is organizing the fair as her action project in her social justice class.

At the Monday morning municipal council meeting, Nightingale described the fair to council members.

Vendors will have a variety of products on display, including cosmetics, food, clothing, household goods and more.Vendors will have fair trade, zero waste, eco friendly practices or donate proceeds to causes and charities and support local business.

Nightingale said the goal of fair trade is to offer better terms of trade to local producers and workers, and to help build local communities.

She said worldwide, 2.1 billion people live on less than $2 a day, and 880 million live on less than $1 a day.

The fair will also have an emphasis on sustainability and environmental awareness.

“Things like plastics aren’t very renewable,” Nightingale said. “There are alternatives out there.”

Coun. Doug Holmes said the event will help clarify terms like fair trade and sustainability.

“I think there is a lot of consumer confusion about what is ethical and what is sustainable,” he said.

The fair will be held in Memorial Park on Sunday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
