Full and partial exemptions affect 11 organizations and 1.35% of general property tax revenues

The municipality of Summerland has granted permissive tax exemptions to a number of organizations and non-profit societies in the community.

The exemptions are evaluated on a four-year cycle.

The largest exemption was for the Kettle Valley Railway Society. This organization, which runs the tourist train, was granted a 100 per cent exemption, worth an estimated $39,722.05.

A total of 11 organizations in the community were granted full or partial tax exemptions.

The organizations were the Kettle Valley Railway Society, the South Okanagan Sailing Association, the Summerland branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Summerland Chamber of Commerce, the Summerland Golf Society, the Summerland Recreation Society (Lakeshore Racquets Club,) the Summerland Community Centre Association, the Summerland Yacht Club, the Summerland Youth Centre Association, Faith Rebekah Lodge and the Summerland Athletic Club (operating as the Summerland Badminton Club.)

Graham Statt, chief administrative officer for Summerland, said there were no changes in this year’s tax exemptions.

Prior to the decisions on the exemptions, each of the groups gave a three-minute presentation to council.

Churches are not included in these tax exemptions as the exemptions granted to churches are done on a 10-year cycle.
