South Okanagan records just 5 new COVID cases for second straight week

The Similkameen Valley saw its third week without new cases

The South Okanagan Similkameen saw its second straight week of single digits for new COVID-19 cases over June 13 to 19.

Keremeos, Princeton and Summerland all went without new cases for the week.

For the Similkameen Valley, it’s the third straight week without a new case of COVID-19

Penticton recorded four new cases over June 13 to 19, while the Southern Okanagan local health area, which stretches from Okanagan Falls to Osoyoos, saw one new case.

The Central Okanagan, which has maintained the most new COVID-19 cases, saw 57 over June 13 to 19.

In her visit to Interior Health on Thursday, Dr. Bonnie Henry pointed to the uptake of vaccinations as one of the reasons behind the drop in cases and hospitalizations, with the focus now turning to ensuring that the remaining portion of the population gets their first doses.

Pockets of lower vaccination levels in Interior Health have contributed to some outbreaks, such as in Windermere, which saw 21 cases over June 13 to 19.
