Princeton RCMP showed the colors over the long weekend in Tulameen and Coalmont.

Corporal Chad Parsons said the first long weekend of the year was fairly quiet - and most of the time was spent educating off-road vehicle drivers about the rules of the road.

“There were lots of people out and about and some people were driving on roads that they shouldn’t have been driving on,” said Parsons.

One problematic area was the Tulameen gas station.

“The gas station is not on an approved road. They ended up pushing their ATVs to the approved road.”

No tickets were issued as the focus was education, said Parsons.

“There will be more enforcement” on future holiday weekends, he added.

RCMP stepped up patrols of the community last year, after a fatality involving an off road vehicle on the May long weekend. There were two long weekend fatal accidents in Tulameen in 2018.

Parsons characterized visitors and residents as being “pretty well behaved.”

There were no complaints of rowdiness or impaired driving.

There were approximately 100 people staying at the Granite Creek campsite, “and a lot of quads.”

All of the vehicles Parsons noted were properly plated, and it was an opportunity for dialogue.

“We just stopped and people came up to talk to us.”
