Putting fire, bylaw, community policing and the city’s emergency operations centre under one roof will be looked at by Penticton city council at Tuesday’s meeting.

City staff will be seeking approval from council to prepare a work plan for a consolidated public safety services centre.

The idea of consolidating the city’s various public services, including bylaw and one of the local fire halls, was included as a recommendation in the city’s recent Asset and Amenity Management Project.

Out of the city’s engagement process for the project, a single public safety centre with fire, bylaw, community policing and the city’s emergency operations centre received the most support out of the four main recommendations.

The other recommendations in the Asset and Amenity Management Project’s findings, include a twin ice rink that replace the existing McLaren and Memorial Arenas. That proposal will be presented at a later date.

Staff are aiming to receive approval to begin building a plan that would cover the scope, schedule, budget, resourcing and community engagement necessary. This would also include looking at site alternatives, needs analysis, financial impacts, facility concepts and funding options for the project.

The public safety and protective services centre concept received the support of 300 out of 380 residents who gave feedback to the city, with some concerns expressed over the potential cost and interest for either a third fire hall or expanding and retrofitting the RCMP building.
