There’s no shortage of places for people in the South Okanagan to skate this winter.
Penticton’s Lakeside Resort is offering all-winter-long public skating after its season-opening on Dec. 15. Set on the resort’s private licensed beach, the fully-lit rink is available to the public by reservation from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
About 45 minutes west of Lakeside at Apex Mountain Resort, an NHL-sized hockey rink and skating loop opened for the season on Dec. 11.
For those who prefer an indoor setting, Penticton’s historic McLaren Arena is back for another year of pick-up hockey and free public skating; however, 2022 signals a new era for a couple of outdoor South Okanagan venues that are ready to welcome skaters.
The Chute Lake Lodge’s new ice rink in Naramata is set to open sometime in early 2022. Public usage fees will be donated to the South Okanagan Women In Need Society (SOWINS).
In downtown Penticton, a new project courtesy of Activate Penticton on 107 Martin Street is almost ready for its grand opening in 2022. The outdoor rink next to City Hall is not yet complete.
Activate Penticton’s president Drew Barnes told the Western News before Christmas that a series of shipment delays in November forced the project’s start date into January.
The nearly $500k rink was set to host the BCHL’s 60th-anniversary all-star game on Jan. 15, before the league postponed the game until 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
