After years of planning work, the Village of Keremeos will be awarding the contract to finally upgrade the community’s wastewater treatment plant.

Council will decide on Tuesday, Feb. 22, whether to accept the staff recommendation to award the $3.7 million contract to Carver Construction.

The bid was the lowest of three submitted for the project, with Chandos Construction coming in at $3.8 million, and Hanna Infrastructer’s bid coming in at $4.9 million.

Separate costs, including engineering services for $607,035 and an ecofluid design package for $500,000 are also included in the village’s total project for the budget.

All three of the bids included GST and a $200,000 contingency fund, and did not include any costs for removing any existing infrastructure.

The bid includes installing a new blower and electrical building, cast-in-place bioreactors with integrated clarifiers, an aerobic digester conversion, and related equipment. These pieces are all required for breaking down sewage and waste through the use of bacteria.

The project will be paid for through $3.95 million from the province’s Strategic Priorites Fund, and $688,000 through a grant for structural flood mitigation.

With council’s approval to accept the bid and go forward with the project, the first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2023.
