Fall crime numbers up in Summerland

Calls for service, violent crimes and property crimes all rose in third quarter of 2020

Violent crimes, property crimes and calls for police service all increased in Summerland during the third quarter of 2020.

According to statistics from the Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment of the RCMP, the Summerland detachment saw a 26 per cent increase in the number of calls for service during the third quarter of the year. There were 984 calls for service, up from 780 during the same period in 2019.

Violent crimes saw a 75 per cent increase, from 20 in the third quarter of 2019 to 35 in the third quarter of 2020. Assaults increased by 112 per cent, from five to 11 and sex offences increased by 125 per cent, from four to nine.

Domestic violence incidents increased by 250 per cent, from two in the third quarter of 2019 to seven in the third quarter of 2020.

The number of incidents of uttering threats increased by 200 per cent, from four in the third quarter of 2019 to 12 in the third quarter of 2020.

Property crimes rose by 14 per cent, from 132 incidents in the third quarter of 2019 to 151 incidents in the third quarter of this year.

The biggest increases were in auto theft, theft from vehicles and other thefts.

Auto thefts increased by 64 per cent, from 11 cases in the third quarter of last year to 18 cases in the third quarter of this year.

Thefts from vehicles rose by 84 per cent, from 19 cases to 35 cases.

Other thefts saw a 47 per cent increase, from 17 to 25 cases.
