Although there may not be anything visible, work on the new supportive housing project on Penticton’s Skaha Lake Road is underway.

According to BC Housing, construction on the 54-unit recovery-focused facility has begun and is currently underway with underground work.

That work includes remediating the soil and preparing the foundation.

The new facility, Nxastwilxtn, will include recovery services, as well as access to Indigenous cultural services and programs.

The facility itself will be built with modular units that are being assembled offsite. The units will be craned into position in the coming months.

The project has met with several delays, due to supply chain and labour issues.

Originally, the project had been set to open in early 2022, but now the opening date has been pushed back to early 2023.

The housing project received council approval in November 2021, with a 4-3 vote that split over whether to allow the project to go forward with the commitments BC Housing had made in a letter regarding the project.

Those commitments were that the facility, regardless of who operates it, would be staffed 24-7, that the housing will be for those who are committed to recovery with a focus on Indigenous individuals and that programs and supports will be provided to the residents including counselling.

Penticton’s ASK Wellness Society and the Ooknakane Friendship Centre were the previously announced operators for the facility.
