Penticton RCMP Cpl. Ted Manchulenko says it was lucky there were no injuries in an accident involving a pickup truck and cyclist Dec. 1.

According to the officer the incident happened just before 4 p.m. at Ellis Street and Nanaimo Avenue.

“The cyclist came off of the crosswalk on a bicycle striking the side of the vehicle,” said Manchulenko. “The moral of the story is that you’re not a pedestrian when you’re on a cycle so you should be a pedestrian or a cyclist, one or the other. Cyclists stay off the sidewalk.”

He added the fact it gets darker earlier also makes pedestrians and cyclists more difficult to see and is another factor for people to remember.

Vehicle break-ins

In and around Nov. 29 and 30 police report a number of break ins to vehicles in the area of South Main Street and Yorkton Avenue.

Some of the vehicles were locked and others weren’t according to Cpl. Manchulenko who added there were not any suspects or video in connection with the matter.

Items stolen from a vehicle

On Dec. 3 someone entered an unlocked Chevrolet Trailblazer parked in front of a residence on Ontario Street.

Taken from the vehicle was a garage door opener which someone used to open the door and steal a Grenade BMX bicycle with lime green pedals valued at $500.

The police identification unit is investigating.

Icy conditions

RCMP are once again reminding motorist about being properly prepared for winter driving conditions following a rash of crashes in the areas of Highway 3A and Kaleden.

“Again, the valley is dry or wet but not icy right now,” said Cpl. Manchulenko. “But as soon as you start to climb it starts to get into winter.”
