The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen is working to close the Keremeos landfill.
The landfill closure effort began in 2017, but the work was delayed because of the material proposed for the final cover.
The plan initially proposed the use of only granular material as a final cover.

This was proposed because the landfill receives little precipitation and produces minimal gas and leachate.
However, the Ministry of Environment responded in late 2018, stating there was insufficient groundwater data to justify using granular material without a vegetative cap.
The options for the site are a granular soil cover, an evapotranspirative cover and a permeable cover system.
Cost estimates range from $400,000 for a granular soil cover to $1.575 for the permeability cover system.
The regional district will proceed with the plan to install a granular material as a cover.
Now that the landfill cover has been selected, the closure work will be tendered for 2022 to 2023.
