An object resembling an explosive device was removed safely after closing a carwash laneway for nearly 24 hours.

A member of the public discovered a cylindrical device in the 3400 block of 32nd Street Sunday night (Oct. 3) after 9 p.m. and immediately called 911.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were unable to identify the object and called in help from the Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) after cordoning off the area of Esso carwash and a portion of the adjacent sidewalk.

EDU had a chance to examine the device, which is not believed to be explosive, and removed it from the area safely.

The area was reopened to the public by around 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4.

“We would like to thank the public for the patience and cooperation in allowing this situation to be resolved safely,” media relations officer Const. Chris Terleski said.

The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the detachment at 250-545-7171.
