5-hectare fire knocked down on Anarchist Mtn.

Steep terrain made the fire a difficult one for crews to fight

Firefighters in the Anarchist Mountain area east of Osoyoos responded to a brushfire Monday night.

Anarchist Mountain Fire Chief Urs Grob said the fire reached about four or five hectares in size after spreading quickly from its starting point at 10:30 p.m.

Local firefighters worked the blaze, which displayed some open flame in the grass and sagebrush, from 10:30 p.m. until around 7 a.m., according to Grob, who said the fire was effectively out when he left Tuesday morning.

No buildings were believed to be under threat, though the fire did come within about 400 metres of a house, Grob said. Firefighters were able to stop that flank in its tracks in a gully.

While the fire was mostly out, there were still some hot spots that needed to be extinguished.

Firefighters from the B.C. Wildfire Service joined the local crews and remain at the scene to douse the hot spots.

Grob said with a fortunately low wind overnight, the main challenge for firefighters was the steep terrain.
