Support local.

That’s the core principle behind the Summerland-based Antlers Surf’s approach to business.

“We started out a couple of years ago with paddleboard rentals, and three years ago we transitioned into manufacturing,” said Brian Gay, one of the crew behind the water sport equipment manufacturer and apparel company. “So we set up a shop in Summerland, and we’re manufacturing paddleboards, wake-surfboards, and surfboards.”

Antlers Surf makes their own boards and put an emphasis on using sustainable materials. The boards are built around a core of recycled foam, and the glue that holds them together is a plant-based epoxy made from tree sap.

As much of the work and production is done nearby as possible, and all of the clothing in their apparel line is made in Canada.

“Even the labels, the woven labels, are made by the last woven label manufacturer in Canada,” said Gay. “Our labels and pockets are all hand-sewn on in Summerland by a friend of ours. We’re trying to support local makers as much as we can.”

They have partnered with other local makers on a range of products, from leather cup-holders laser engraved in Summerland, to cutting boards and more.

Antlers Surf is also partnering with the new owners of the Skaha Marina in providing rentals over the summer. The renovations in the marina also include a new retail space where the Summerland surf company will set up to sell their boards, clothing, and other partnered products in the coming months.
