The new contract for garbage collection across the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen starts in July and the district has started its compatibility check for residents' carts.
The evaluations will take place over March and April for residents who submitted requests to the RDOS, with new requests no longer being accepted.
Residents who do not receive an evaluation date in the mail or by email by April 21 are asked to call the RDOS' solid waste hotline at 250-490-4129.
Any recycling, yard waste or garbage containers that are not approved will not be picked up after July 1.
The new curbside collection contract will see Waste Connections Canada move to fully automated trucks throughout the region.
The contract includes compost/green waste pickup, however that is not taking effect yet due to the lack of a facility in the region at this point.
Residents who receive an evaluation notice are asked to have all their carts out on the curb on the specified date from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Residents who are currently renting curbside carts from Waste Connections of Canada will automatically be evaluated to be included with curbside collection.
Wildlife-resistant carts that are not the clip-lock style will not be approved.
After the carts have been evaluated, a white sticker will be placed on each cart with the results of the evaluation, and the sticker may be placed on the inside of the lid.
Residents are asked to remove the sticker and keep it or take a photo for records.
Residents who complete the cart change-out request form after Tuesday, April 1, 2025, may have to wait until after the initial delivery to receive the requested carts. These requests will be accommodated after July 1, 2025, if the carts requested are still available. A $45 change-out fee may apply.
