Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department’s annual yard sale raises record amount this year

The money raised supports community events and organizations, and buys equipment for the department.

The Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department held their annual yard sale on May 11, raising funds for the department and the community.

“The funds raised here, we are going to be putting back into the community,” said Sergej Sinicin, the volunteer firefighter in charge of the sale. “Funds go to bursaries, we donate to (the Kaleden Community) Hub (food bank), we donate to events in Penticton, we put it back into the community. Some of the funds will go to help us to purchase the equipment that we need to perform better duties here locally.”

It was a record breaking year for money raised, said fire chief Denis Gaudry.

This year, the yard sale raised well over $8,000. This year, the department will also put some money toward landscaping around the new building, as well as into bursaries.

“It’s outstanding,” Gaudry said. “We can’t believe how much the community and surrounding areas are supporting us. Congrats goes out to the community and firefighters.”

In previous years, the department purchased rescue equipment, training aides for the firefighters, emergency signs and first response materials with the funds raised through the sale.

What wasn’t sold during the annual sale also goes to help the community, with the leftover items being donated to various charitable groups.

Sinicin said the idea is to give a new life to as many of the items as possible.

“At the end of the garage sale, if some of these items aren’t sold, we have arranged a pick-up with charitable organizations. For instance, the Canadian Food Fund for Children is coming out, the Diabetes Society is coming out.”

The unsold items will get their third chance to find use, and not just within our community. Some of the items will be packaged and sent to other nations and locations outside of Canada.
