Play tells stories from rural Maine

Summerland Secondary School production to be staged May 10

Acting 12 students at Summerland Secondary School will present a series of short scenes, set in rural Maine, in their final high school dramatic production.

Almost, Maine, a play by Joh Cariani, is about a small community in rural Maine. The short scenes tell the stories of people in the community.

“Some find love and some lose it, but they’re all connected,” said Emily Eaton, assistant director of the play.

“This is a great heartwarming show,” said Heather Ayris, drama teacher at the high school.

She added that the students have been in drama classes for the past four years and have been on stage in the past. “This is their farewell play.”

The play was first staged Off-Broadway in January and February, 2006. Since that time, it has become popular in professional and nonprofessional theatre companies world wide, and it is now the most produced play in North American high schools.

“We did all the scenes, we’ve gotten all the costumes, we built the entire set,” Eaton said.

Ayris said local pallets and apple boxes were used in the set construction to give the play an authentic rural feel.

The play will be shown at Centre Stage Theatre on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation.
