A Cawston cat is receiving international attention for her speaking skills.

Bella is a four-year-old munchkin, Scottish fold, polydactyl, meaning she has 26 toes. She was entered in “America’s Favorite Pet” by her “Mama” Marlene Harker.

Since being entered in the competition Bella has reached the top five pets in the feline category. The competition is open to voters and pets from around the world.

Bella currently sits fourth out of the top five cats, making it unlikely that she’ll advance to the final round and compete against other animals as the top cat. However, Harker says she’s still extremely proud of her furry friend.

The South Okanagan local began teaching Bella how to speak three years ago. She says Bella knows many others phrases too, like “hello” “yes” and “no”. But “mama” is her go to phrase — especially when she wants a treat.

To celebrate Bella’s new-found fame, Harker plans on taking her for a walk on a leash through downtown Keremeos sometime in October. She says Bella loves people and will likely bask in the attention.
