Watching the devastating news on Somalia at the beginning of August this year, inspired two local young ladies to action. “We wanted to do something—we have to do something, “ was a statement made by Thyme Callihoo at the start.
Callihoo and her friend Taneesha Beaupre created and carried out a fundraiser called “Kids helping Kids.” Their goal was to raise $1000 to help out the people of Somalia. Up until September 16 of this year, the Canadian Government will match any funds raised, making the girls hopeful for an actual total of $2000.
A few hours spent at a farmers market in Penticton, every Tuesday for 2 hours at Coopers Foods and the last two days spent at the Fall Fair, the girls set up with their donation can and poster, spending time telling people what they were doing and why they were doing it.
As of September 9, the girls were able to raise a total of $510. With the government matching funds, their total will be $1020. The girls are happy that they were able to do something to help the people in Somalia. “We feel good about what we have done,” states Beaupre.
Marjorie Holland, local Red Cross volunteer accepted the funds raised by the girls and will forward them on to the Canadian Red Cross. She was impressed with the girls stating, “I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you care about the world you live in. Imagine, if everybody did just one little thing like this, think of what kind of world it would be.”
The girls would like to extend their thanks to Coopers Foods and the Fall Fair Association for their support, to Karen Beaupre for helping them get the fundraiser set up to Marjorie Holland at Red Cross and to the community, for helping them to achieve their goal.
