Those who specialize in wildfire mitigation will be visiting homes across the South Okanagan to help people prepare for potential disasters this summer.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is hoping property owners go the extra mile this year in protecting their homes by booking a free FireSmart Assessment.

Wildfire mitigation experts from the RDOS will provide suggestions on what people can do when disaster strikes close to home, specific to the space in which they live.

“In today’s climate, we are seeing increased wildfire events throughout the southern Interior that require homeowners to be more vigilant in protecting their properties from wildfire events,” said Sean Vaisler, the RDOS’ manager of emergency services. “It’s important to take some simple steps around our properties to protect your property from wildfires.”

Also known as Home Hazard Assessments, the RDOS has made it available online to book service appointments as of June 8. People can book their assessment here.

Wildfire mitigation specialists may suggest clearing dead or combustible vegetation, implementing wildfire-resilient landscaping, or using fire-resistant roofing materials when they arrive at community properties, according to the RDOS.

“Protect your home from the effects of wildfires and flying embers,” the region said.

Along with offering home visits ahead of the summer, the region is also inviting the community for a number of upcoming FireSmart events from June 11 to 18 in places like Princeton, Keremeos, Oliver and Okanagan Falls.
