Curling Canada announced the Penticton Western News as a Media Partner of the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
The South Okanagan Events Centre will host Canada’s best women’s curlers Jan. 27 to Feb 4, 2018.
“We are obviously excited to have been selected as one of the key media partners for the 2018 Scotties. We pride ourselves at the Western News on the high level of professionalism and service that we will bring to both Curling Canada and the Host Committee,” said Shannon Simpson, group publisher South Okanagan. “We know the importance of having our advertising, editorial, social media and graphic design teams located right here in Penticton to ensure the 2018 Scotties are tremendous community success. The spotlight will be shining on our city next January and we look forward to playing a role in the success.”
For the first time in the history of the Canadian Women’s Curling Championship a 16-team field will compete.
The expanded field is being utilized as a pilot after the format was approved at Curling Canada’s annual meetings this past summer in Cornwall, Ont. The field will feature the 14 provincial/territorial champions of Curling Canada’s Member Associations, along with defending champion Team Canada. The qualifying process for the 16th team is still being determined and will be announced later
The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is expected to bring a significant economic benefit to the City of Penticton, estimated to be in the range of $6 million to $12 million. Attendees will provide economic spinoffs through hotel stays, shopping, dining and other tourism activities. It will also bring national television exposure and an opportunity to highlight the area. The arena audience is expected to be in excess of 80,000 over the eight days of competition.
