Residents throughout the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen are reminded that old and unwanted Christmas lights can be recycled.

Every product with a plug or battery is fully recyclable in B.C. Christmas light strings, light bulbs and lighting fixtures can be taken to J&C Bottle Depot in Penticton, the T2 Market Bottle Depot in Oliver, the Osoyoos Bottle Depot and the Hut Bottle Depot in Princeton. As well the Campbell Mountain Landfill in Penticton, Summerland Landfill, Princeton Landfill, Okanagan Falls Landfill, Oliver Landfill and Keremeos Transfer Station can also accept lighting equipment free of charge.

Lightbulbs can also be recycled at all Home Hardware locations, RONA, London Drugs and the Canadian Tire in Penticton. These locations can’t take light strings but can recycle any type of light bulb throughout the year.

Lighting equipment and light bulbs have to be dropped off at participating depots and are not collected from homes as part of residential recycling. Homes or business with large volumes of lights or equipment are asked to contact LightRecycle directly for details on free collection.

LightRecycle is a not-for-profit group that organizes free drop off at depots for lighting equipment and light bulbs. Metal, glass and even mercury are separated out and responsibly recycled.

Visit the LightRecycle webpage at www.lightrecycle.ca for more details or call the Recycling Council of B.C. at 1-800-667-4321.
