Princeton’s mayor is suggesting a public meeting to gauge the local feeling about the legalization of marijuana.

“How are we going to get the town’s temperature on this?” Frank Armitage asked at Monday’s council meeting.

“There seems to be as many for it as against it.”

Marijuana sales are expected to be legal July 1, and while each province is to decide how this will be accommodated, in BC the NDP government has already stated many of the decisions will be made by local councils.

Armitage said Princeton is still waiting for further guidance from the province.

“A lot of towns have jumped the gun on this,” he said.

The mayor’s comments were prompted by several letters town hall has received from other communities asking for local support of proposals addressing how taxes will be divided between communities and the province.
