“It’s amazing how newspapers can solve problems”

Story leads to generous donation for Princeton woman…and there is a twist to the tale

A newspaper article and a generous heart combined this week to brighten the New Year for a Princeton resident -and they also created sense of deja vu.

The Spotlight reported someone had stolen a red, folding bicycle from the lobby of a Fenchurch Avenue apartment building, just before Christmas.

The owner, Barb Miller, relied on the bike for transportation and exercise and police were seeking information about the theft.

“I never should have left it there,” said Miller.

Someone with a folding bike that wasn’t getting much use read the story and delivered it to the Princeton RCMP detachment.

“Holy smokes that is quite a bike,” Miller exclaimed, when Sergeant Barry Kennedy wheeled it out of his office for her to see. “Mine didn’t have any bells and whistles…This fellow is so kind. I would like to thank him.”

What makes the donation extra special for Miller is that the bike that was stolen from her a few weeks ago had a similar history.

Her red bike, which she inherited from a friend, was a replacement bike for another folding bike that was stolen from its original owner in Penticton.

“It was in the Penticton paper, and somebody saw the paper and had a folding bike and he gave it to her,” she said.

“It’s amazing how newspapers can solve problems.”
