A fire consumed a mobile home in West Kelowna on the evening of April 28, and the incident is now being investigated as “suspicious in nature.”

The West Kelowna Fire Rescue was called to a blaze at an abandoned structure on the 1800 Block of Ross Road at approximately 6:30 p.m. on April 28.

The smoke from this fire was highly visible from Highway 97. First arriving crews worked quickly to knock down the blaze from the outside, said Deputy Fire Chief Chad Gartrell.

Fire crews were able to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring structures or the surrounding field.

Due to safety concerns, crews did not enter the structure and battled the blaze from the outside.

The mobile home was abandoned and is in the process of being demolished. Due to the construction work being done on the home and the fire suppression efforts undertaken by West Kelowna Fire Rescue, the fire is considered to be suspicious in nature but with cause undetermined.

Westbank First Nations bylaw, the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, BC Hydro and FortisBC also attended the incident.
